Betty Washburn

February 7, 1926 — January 14, 2019

Mrs. Betty Jenkins Washburn, age 92, of Boiling Springs, NC, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019 at her residence.
She is survived by her children, Cathy Boyd (James) of Chesnee, SC, Libby Washburn Blair (Scott) of Boiling Springs, NC, and Harry Washburn, Jr. (Sherwin) of Boiling Springs, NC, grandchildren, Wes Boyd (Amanda), Jerry Boyd (Amber), Katie Jolley (Aaron), Meredith Foy (Alan), all of Chesnee, SC, a step granddaughter, Scottie Handford (Paul) of Easley, SC, Downey Hinton (Aaron), Jay Washburn III (Jamie), and Brett Washburn, all of Boiling Springs, NC, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Born on February 7, 1926 in Lake County, Florida, Mrs. Washburn was the daughter of the late James Lineberry Jenkins and Kate McArn Watson. Mrs. Washburn was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Eugene Washburn Sr., a brother, Jay Jenkins, and sisters, Catherine Vosecky, and Neil Burrus.
Mrs. Washburn loved Boiling Springs Baptist Church where she was a lifelong active member. She had a special place in her heart for special needs children and she taught special education at Waco and Lattimore elementary schools. Extremely proud of her heritage, Betty loved her family home place in Riverton along the Lumbee River. She could hold you captive with her exceptional storytelling, often accused of embellishing the details. A word or phrase would send Betty into song. Mrs. Washburn was known affectionately as Mimi to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Boiling Springs Baptist Church on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm to be conducted by Dr. Robert Lamb and Rev. Keith McKinney. A visitation will be held following the service. A private burial will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Eugene and Betty Washburn and S.L. and Betty Johnson Endowed Scholarship at Gardner-Webb University, 110 South Main St. Boiling Springs, NC 28017, Boiling Springs Baptist Church, 307 S Main St, Shelby, NC 28152 and Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
