Elise died peacefully at her home on June 27 after celebrating her 101st birthday last week. She was the daughter of the late William T. Davis and Stella Harrill Davis. Elise was born in Lattimore, NC, on June 21, 1917, and moved to Charlotte when she was two years old. She lived in Fourth Ward until she was ten, when her family built a home in a new section called Eastover.
She graduated from Central High School. Many years later she was back in her old school, which was now CPCC, studying music, dance, theatre and acting for the camera. She was an active member of Theatre Charlotte and a member of Sweet Adelines for twelve years. She enjoyed doing television commercials.
Elise was an avid gardener. She loved to dig in her flowers and trim shrubbery. One year she ordered 500 pansies and surprised her friends by planting pansies in their yards.
Elise was a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church and Lattimore Baptist Church. She loved her church, family, friends and traveling.
She owned the Glory Be Antique Shop. She closed Glory Be in 1979 so she could be free to travel with the Sweet Adelines.
She is survived by her only son, Ned T. Lyerly, Sr., and his wife, Peggy; her former daughter-in-law Frances McCall Lyerly; grandchildren Ned T. Lyerly, Jr. (LeAnn), Jill Venable (Mason), Lynda Hill (Barry), Casey Dilg (Sarah), and Carla Hopper (Dale). Also surviving are great grandchildren Justin Avery, Brandon Venable, Hailey Venable, Grace Ratliff, Ryan Hill, Calvin Dilg and Elliott Dilg.
Elise was married to F. T. Lyerly, Jr. for 50 years until his death in 1987. In 1991, she was married to her friend and former neighbor, Robert M. Carter, until his death in 2001. Her only daughter, Nancy Elise Lyerly, died in 1997. She was also predeceased by her only brother, Frank Davis.
A memorial service will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, June 30, at Lattimore Baptist Church, 303 Peachtree Road, Lattimore, NC. A graveside service will immediately follow the memorial service with a reception to follow in the church Fellowship Hall.
We invite you to wear a pink to the funeral. It was Elise's favorite color, and she would say: "No man can say no to me when I wear pink!"
Memorials may be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203 or Lattimore Baptist Church, P O Box 188, Lattimore, NC 28089.
