Hugh Brittain

Hugh Bernard Brittain, age 94, passed away on April 8, 2021 at The Elms at Spicewood Cottages in Clyde, NC.

He is survived by two sons: Rev. Tim Brittain and wife Becky of Maggie Valley, NC; Todd Brittain and wife Michelle of Shelby, NC; three grandchildren: Mary Brittain Cash of Evergreen, CO; Brian Brittain of Shelby, NC; Amanda Brittain Janda of Shelby, NC; four great grandchildren: Britton Cash and Calvin Cash of Evergreen, CO; Kaitlyn Janda and Brooklyn Janda of Shelby, NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Catawba County on January 3, 1927, Hugh was the son of the late Rev. P. H. Brittain and Minnie Cline Brittain. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Winnie Irene Borders Brittain.

Hugh graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 1947. He taught at St. Stephens Elementary School in Hickory for a year. For twenty-nine years, he worked for the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina. He founded the Shelby Christian Rehabilitation Center and operated it for ten years. He was the writer of the daily “The Bible Says” column in The Shelby Star and The Gaston Gazette newspapers for over twenty-five years. He authored a book, “Good Morning, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.” He was an active member of The Gideons International for many years.

Due to COVID-19, the immediate family will have a private graveside service. At some point in the future, a memorial service for family and friends will be conducted at Cleveland Funeral Services and Crematory in Shelby, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800.
