Leland is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Whitten Howell of the home, his children, Janet Whitaker (David) of Gastonia, NC, Scarlet Jones (Russell) of Charlotte, NC, Cindy Sandidge (Scott) of Lynchburg, VA, and Daniel Howell (Angie) of Earl, NC, seven grandchildren, Graham Whitaker (Danielle), Tori Oliver (Craig), Emma DeArmon (Kyle), Hannah Sanderson (Eric), Olivia Sims (Aaron), Ryan Sandidge, William Jones, and Claire Sandidge, a great grandson, Huxley Sims, and a sister, Betty Sturkie of Columbia, SC.
Born in Columbia, SC, Leland was the son of the late Thomas A. Howell and Thella Mae Spires Howell and was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Grayson Whitaker, a sister, Dorothy Gantt, and two brothers, Olin and Marvin Howell.
Leland was born in Columbia, SC and then moved to North Carolina in 1964. He was a faithful member, deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Morning Star Baptist Church.
