Veleria Maxine York

   Veleria Maxine York, 97 of Shelby, NC, passed away Friday, May 24, at Atrium Health Cleveland hospital following a brief illness.
     "Val" was a native of Rutherford County NC, the daughter of John Thomas York and Emma Matilda Boone. In addition to her parents, Veleria was also preceded in death by all of her siblings: Auburn, Hettie, Holden, Harvey, Robert, Lucille, and Mary.
     After graduating high school in Lincoln County NC, Veleria studied nursing at various locations including Concord NC, Birmingham AL, and New York City.
     She enlisted as a nurse in the United States Air Force serving active duty stateside in Shreveport LA during the Korean War. Afterwards, Veleria remained in the USAF Reserves for many years ultimately retiring as a lieutenant colonel. She was also a nurse anesthetist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston SC for more than twenty years.
     Veleria loved her country, the music of the 1940s, and her network of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who were literally scattered from Carolina to California.
     Final arrangements were being handled by Cleveland Funeral Services of Shelby. At Val's specific direction, there were to be no formal services. Her USAF urn will be interred in a niche at the columbarium at Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby.
