Billy Dean "Butch" Latham

February 24, 1942 ~ September 7, 2022 (age 80)

Billy Dean Latham, age 80 of Shelby, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Wendover Hospice House.

Born on February 24, 1942 in Cleveland County, NC, Butch was the son of the late William Mack Latham and Maggie Lee Black Latham. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife, Brenda Faye Rollins Latham, his sister, Ann Latham Pruett Cox, and his late sister-in-law, Evelyn Latham.

Bill Latham was fondly known as "Butch" to his family and friends, "PawPaw" to his grandchildren, and "Coach Latham" by many.

Bill graduated from Shelby High School and was a member of the United States Air Force and served his country for four years. From childhood onward, Bill worked many jobs from cutting grass, delivering newspapers, driving trucks, installing air[1]conditioning insulation, substitute teaching, etc. While raising his family he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Appalachian State University. He coached many ball teams of many sports, served on many committees including the Booster Club and the Lion’s Club. He was a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Masonic lodge in Boiling Springs, NC. Although he was a jack of all trades, the majority of his career was spent working for the US Postal Service where he was a Post Master in Fallston, NC, then in Boiling Springs, NC until retirement. After retiring from the Postal service, he continued to work over a decade for Shelby City Park at the Golf Shop.

Throughout his life, he loved to talk, never met a stranger and was first in line for any adventure. He loved playing golf, hunting, fishing, gardening, watching old movies and sports, reading, was a history buff, working on projects, and spending time with his friends and family. Over the years he loved roller skating, square dancing, and family cookouts. He was always willing to do anything for anyone especially for his wife of 59 years. Even during his last days, he still tried to make others feel better with his sense of humor. He lived life to the fullest.

Left to cherish his memory, he is survived by his daughters, Deana Latham Matamoros and Karen Latham Good, both of Shelby, NC; his grandchildren, Latham Cole Good, Mia Good, Cody Matamoros, Kaidy Matamoros, Kailyn Matamoros, and Calyssa Matamoros, all of Shelby, NC; a great-grandson by heart, Zane Neal of Boiling Springs, SC; his brothers, Gene Latham and wife Judy of Shelby, NC, and Floyd Latham of Shelby, NC, along with many nieces, nephews and close family friends.
